CÂNTARO is a decorative vase inspired by the old pitchers used for transporting and storing water. It is defined as an elegant and at the same time elemental piece, through its simple line and sharp geometry. It is made from ancestral firing process called “Soenga” which is a traditional wood-fired pit in the ground, with a reduction fired at 1000 C. This process gives the item its black colour and some unique patterns from the wood firing.

Produced in Vila Real, in the north of Portugal. Made from ancestral firing process called Soenga which is a traditional wood-fired pit in the ground, with a reduction fired at 1000 C, which gives the item its black colour and some unique patterns from the wood firing. The black pottery in Vila Real dates back to the 17th century which makes this art something that has to be protected and cherished. In this art, we can see the strength and resilience of the people of this region because it’s an arduous, heavy, dirty, tiring process, icy in winter, scorching in summer. This is wisdom passed from generation to generation to our day.
