Cork side table by DAM

The side table represents the women called “VARINAS” from the lands of Var, now known as Ovar – a city in Portugal. In the past, they went by train to Porto and Lisbon with a wheel on the head, carrying the basket, to sell fish. With cork as the base material, the table includes a felt wheel that supports the top and represents the artifact that facilitates the transport of the basket on the head. The wheel is a small circular pillow made with hand-interlaced felt waste.

Materials & Finishings

Materials: Cork (natural and reciclable) and felt waste from the Portuguese hat making industry; Finishings: Colorless aqueous coating on cork; felt in ‘deep blue’, ‘hot red’ or ‘scared blue’ and flower pattern or arrow pattern.

More about the cork of Varina

Characteristics: High performance in thermal, acoustic, and anti-vibration insulation. Resistant to abrasion and to impact. Waterproof and fire retardant (burns without a flame and does not emit toxic gases during combustion). Finishing: Colourless aqueous coating with properties of water repellency, oil, and stains and high resistance to UV and ageing, keeping the natural touch and breathability of cork. Sustainability: Vegetable, biodegradable and recycled material. No risk to health and the environment. A cork oak has a life span around 200 years of age and can be corked around 18 times.

Important details

Nature is perfect with all the natural imperfections. So differences of colour and tonality can happen due to common changes in the natural materials. Few cork granules may be released as time goes by due to the natural characteristics of the cork. The product is handmade so final dimensions may vary slightly. All these changes and variations are not considered defects.

Installation

Ready to use!

Clean & maintenance

Use a dry, soft cotton cloth or a vacuum cleaner to clean your piece. Do not use detergent or any cleaning product, only water. Avoid the constant direct sunlight, because it can darken the cork. Avoid contact with acid liquids, because it could create stains.

Warranty

All DAM products are guaranteed for a period of 2 years. It includes problems concerned with the production or material faults. During this time we will repair or replace the products. The warranty excludes all damages caused by improper usage, negligence or natural wearing out of the product.
